Dance [Woodwind Quintet]

　"Danse" is one of Debussy's early piano works. It was originally published as "Tarentelle Styrienne" but was later retitled "Danse" upon re-publication. It was subsequently orchestrated by Maurice Ravel.
　"Tarentella," as in the original title, refers to a folk dance from Southern Italy (Naples), said to originate from the city name Taranto. Chopin, Liszt, Burgmüller, and others also composed piano pieces in the style of this dynamic dance in 6/8 time.
　The charm of this piece lies undoubtedly in its rhythm, with frequent shifts between 6/8 and 3/4 time. It is structured in a three-part form, moving from fast to slow to fast, with simple yet beautiful harmonies and sonorities appearing in the middle section. Around the time this piece was composed, Debussy was actively engaging with Symbolist artists who were prominent at the time. This period can be said to have influenced his later style. In 1890, many representative piano works by Debussy, such as "Rêverie" and "Suite bergamasque," were composed. (Yuto Yamada)
