Pietro Mascagni's opera "Cavalleria Rusticana," which premiered in 1890, is renowned as a masterpiece of Verismo opera. This one-act opera, set in late 19th-century Sicily, Italy, depicts the intense loves, hates, and tragedies of ordinary people.
Among its various parts, the "Intermezzo" is an instrumental piece placed in the middle of the story, serving to temporarily quiet the tension-filled dramatic flow. Its gentle melody, primarily featuring string instruments, exudes a piety that can even be described as religious, and a profound lyricism, making it a particularly beloved section of the entire work.
This arrangement reworks this beautiful Intermezzo for alto saxophone and piano. While preserving the rich emotional depth of the original piece, the soft and warm tone of the saxophone further enhances the lyrical quality of the melody.
