Hofu Odori Paraphrase [Flute Trio]

This is an arrangement for clarinet trio of "Hofu Odori" (commonly known as "Hofu Ondo"), a song danced during the Obon festival in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was commissioned by the Executive Committee of the "35th Clarinet Festival in Yamaguchi." The composer, Jun Suzuki, also from Hofu City, has many hit songs to his name, including "Koyubi no Omoide" and "Yottsu no Onegai." Although the original piece is an "ondo" (traditional Japanese folk dance song) style, I attempted to arrange and compose it by extracting only the melody. The middle section was newly created from the melodic opening sequence. This song is largely unknown even within Yamaguchi Prefecture, except among Hofu citizens. However, I hope it will be widely performed as a new chamber music piece with a Japanese-style melody. It was premiered in December 2018 at the "35th Clarinet Festival in Yamaguchi" by Mieko Harada, Erina Honma, and Toru Kanayama.
