Suite Bergamasque [12 Saxophones]
"Suite bergamasque" is a piano suite composed in 1890 by Claude Debussy, a pioneer of French Impressionist music, and is one of Debussy's early works.
It consists of four movements (Prélude, Menuet, Clair de lune, and Passepied), among which "Clair de lune" can be considered Debussy's signature piece. The encounter between Debussy's colorful works and the classically trained saxophone, which originated in France, evokes a splendid sound that makes the most of the saxophone's material and functionality, the grace of melodies that have leapt from piano to saxophone, and at times, an unexpected playfulness! It's an exciting thought.
We anticipate that "Suite bergamasque" performed by a saxophone orchestra will bring new discoveries and joy throughout the performance space.
This score was commissioned by the Moire Saxophone Ensemble, which is active primarily in Fukushima Prefecture, and was premiered on October 11, 2015 (Sunday) at the "Moire Saxophone Ensemble's 18th Regular Concert" (held at the Fukushima City Ongakudo Main Hall, conducted by Hideki Nomura).
This work is written in 12 parts for [DOUZE SAX] (saxophone dodecet). It can be performed by 12 players, and a large-scale saxophone orchestra will also achieve a grand sound. It can also be performed as an octet by using the 1st and 2nd parts of each instrument. If a sopranino saxophone or bass saxophone is unavailable, please use the included transposed parts. (Soprillo saxophone parts are also included)
The "Echo" sections in the score are written with performance effect (mainly richness of overtones) in mind. Please adjust the number of players and volume (gently restrained volume) according to the performers and the venue's acoustics.
The 3rd Alto Saxophone and 3rd Tenor Saxophone parts are arranged with slightly simpler notes.
